We are perhaps the only manufacturer to offer a number of variations to suit many of the applications that occur in the commercial and architectural lighting markets. Lumenyte has shifted its focus a bit to concentrate more on: expanding its capabilities as a supplier of lighting solutions that incorporate wider variety of technology in a wider variety of markets, and to present our optical fiber as a solution in OEM markets. Although Lumenyte has diversified its resources and capabilities, our commitment to our optical fiber core products remains strong.
One such product, perhaps our premiere optical fiber product line is our line of Linear Emitting optical fiber (LEF). LEF was designed to emit increased light out the side of the fiber to provide directional illumination and a brighter product. The concept was good but the doing proved to be somewhat challenging. It was easy to get the light out the side, but how could it be done in a manner that would allow the light to be projected in a controlled manner. The light injected into the fiber would need to transmit for a reasonable distance, and the linear emission would need to be consistent. It would also need to be produced using methods that would allow it to be offered at a reasonable price. Long story short Lumenyte developed a patented system whereby optical reflectors are placed into the fiber by a computer controlled machine using a spacing algorithm. We also deployed a database to track the output results. The database is used to analyze the results and make improvements, and as a quality control measure.
LEF is utilized primarily for two applications, cove lighting and as a neon replacement. It provides a beautiful gradual color changing presentation in coves. LEF rivals Neon for brightness and when viewed from more than 20 or 25 yards the individual optical reflectors blend into a solid line of light, with the capability of changing colors. LEF is recommended for use in lengths up to 50’ depending on the LEF size, and whether illuminators are used on a single end or on both ends. But as things go, our customers have utilized LEF in even longer lengths.
LEF winds up offering a couple significant advantages over neon and other forms of cove lighting. Plastic is a durable material when properly constructed and protected. There are LEF installations outdoors that have been installed for over 10 years and still work. The beauty is, this is with minimal or no maintenance of the fiber. Maintenance activities are primarily necessary only on the devices that illuminate the fiber. So LEF is generally cheaper to both implement and maintain than other forms of lighting.
